Boot Hill Museum - located at Front Street & Fifth Avenue, facing Wyatt Earp Blvd. is an accredited western history museum located on the original site of Boot Hill Cemetery in downtown Dodge City. Life in the 19th century is interpreted through audio-visual programs, exhibits, a reconstruction of Dodge City 1876 and old west restorations. Daily summer entertainment includes living history displays, stagecoach rides through downtown Dodge City, gunfight re-enactments, and a Long Branch Saloon Variety Show is offered every evening beginning Memorial weekend through mid-August. (The Long Branch Variety Show and dinner are available year round for groups by reservation.) Admission is charged. The Musueum is open year round, daily. Second Avenue, this restored Andrew Carnegie Library building now features a variety of art exhibits. The building is on the National Register of Historic Sites and boasts an unusual classical architectural design. The Center is open Tuesday through Firday, noon to 5:00 p.m. and Saturday 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.; closed Sunday and Monday. Free Admission. Wyatt Earp Blvd. is a beautifully renovated train depot, the largest in the state. This building once housed the Harvey House and restaurant and is rented for parties and meetings. Also housed in this facility is a state of the art theater. Dinner theater productions performed throughout the year. Call for reservations and guided tours through the building. The National Sprint Tour and World of Outlaws races are two of the featured events at this track. Racing season runs April through October. The Dodge City Days Rodeo is a must attend in late July/early August. A PRCA Wrangler Rodeo Pro Tour event is picked as one of the best by the cowboys themselves year after year. Rodeos, horse shows, roping contests and related activities are held here. Call for a schedule of events 620-225-2244 or check out their website: Dodge City Roundup Dodge City Trail of Fame - wends its way through the Dodge City historic district from the newly restored Santa Fe Depot, sundial park and railraod caboose on the east to the Convention and Visitors Bureau and Boot Hill Museum on the west. Famous and historic western figures memorialized include Wyatt Earp, "Bat" Masterson, "Doc" Holliday, Gen. George A. Custer, "Big Nose" Kate Elder to name just a few. Many of the main cast members of "Gunsmoke," including James Arness, Amanda blake, Milburn Stone, Ken Curtis and Buck Taylor are also installed. The current centerpiece of the Dodge CIty Trail of Fame is the larger than life "Wyatt Earp, Famous Dodge City Lawman." Fort Dodge - Long before Dodge City was a hustling, bustling cattle town, Fort Dodge was established to protect railroad workers and travelers on the Santa Fe Trail from the Plains Indians. Today the Fort is utilized as a retirement community and nursing facility for retired Kansas veterans. A historic library and self-guided walking tour tell the fort's history to visitors. For more information call (620) 227-1616. Liberty Garden - Located in historic Wright Park, Dodge City’s Liberty Garden was designed as a place of remembrance and solitude. Dodge City is honored to be the first community in Kansas to receive a portion of the World Trade Center. The 4-foot section of steel is placed under the U.S. Flag and between two 110 inch replicas of the twin towers. The 1,200 lb. piece of steel was recovered from Ground Zero in New York City. Liberty Garden also features a portion of the Pentagon building at the crash site of 9-11. Soon to be put in place are stones from the field in Pennsylvania where flight 93 crashed. Dedicated on September 11, 2002, the Liberty Garden is open to everyone as a place of reflection and honor. Mueller-Schmidt House - Built to be one of the most splendid homes in Dodge City, Ford County's "Home of Stone" lives up to this, even today. It remains the lone stone house in Dodge City, elegant in its simplicity of line. It can also claim the distinction of being the oldest building in Dodge City that is still on its original site. The House is open to the public May to September and is free of charge (donations accepted). Santa Fe Trail - Tracks of the original wagon trail used by pioneers from 1821 to 1872 are located nine miles west of Dodge City on US 50. This site, which contains the largest continuous stretch of clearly defined tracks along the entire route of the trail, is easy to reach. -- watch for the "Historic Marker" signs.For more information call (620) 227-8188. |
